As a humanitarian aid worker, you already know how demanding this profession is, especially if you work in armed conflict zones, crises and emergencies on the field with populations in distress.
There are many daily challenges, fires to put out, problems to solve, and people with needs.
It’s difficult to assess needs, design effective programs and implement them while managing people, risks and the relentless demands from others. Aid workers do extraordinary things in the most challenging, dangerous places.
But does it really have to be so hard?
Working in humanitarian contexts with armed conflict and high levels of criminality is even harder when there is a lack of experience, skills or know-how and not enough support!
It doesn’t matter what your job or role is, you have a right to be trained and supported well enough to do your job to the best of your ability, and to be as safe as possible.
The problem is, most organisations don’t have the budgets to do that.
For decades, humanitarian organisations and agencies have depended on the “apprentice model”, where you would learn by doing and from being supported by people more experienced than you. The idea is that with enough time and support you would learn the skills needed for your role with enough support and time.
This system might work when the people who are supposed to support and train you have enough experience and the right skills to pass on what they have learned. It works when people have the time and energy to explain things and show you how things work. Or even have the time to answer your questions patiently!
But we all know that rarely happens.
There definitely needs to be much more Contextual Understanding, Threat Management & Programme / Project management skills building in the humanitarian sector, but also in other critical areas like Engagement, Emotional Intelligence, and Resource Management.
Not having a good manager can be stressful. Feeling that you are not trained or supported well enough is not only stressful, can contribute to performance issues.
We created Humanitarianz to support you, the humanitarian aid worker working in the field.
Despite the many challenges and considerable risks, humanitarian aid work is one of the most rewarding and exciting professions on the planet! It’s a daring profession where you get to help the people who are the worst off in the world.

What we offer:
LIVE MONTHLY SESSIONS
Join us every month for sessions that talk about every aspect of humanitarian work possible!
PERSONALISED ONE-OFF SESSIONS
This is a good option if you are dealing with a complex problem or situation and need some outside guidance. I offer very flexible packages and affordable prices.
ON DEMAND COURSES
These courses are designed to be done at your own pace. There are no live sessions. You just follow the course at your own speed, on your own schedule.
WHY MENTORING?
Mentoring is a very powerful way to build your skills and level of competence and an excellent way to develop your emotional intelligence too. It’s hard to be an effective manager or humanitarian with low emotional intelligence. Low emotional intelligence in teams often leads to more conflict.
Mentoring consists of one-to-one sessions with me for as short or long a time as you need to work on whatever it is you want to work on. This could be building specific skills or competence in a specific area or when you are managing a specific challenge or situation. Because I am not in your organisation or your hierarchy, it works better. Opening up has to feel and be safe. I am 200% confidential!
FREE CONTENT
You will find information and advice on our blog, on Facebook.

COMMUNITIES
Humanitarianz aims to generate and support a diverse, vibrant community of humanitarian aid workers who, in turn support and learn from each other. This community is not ready yet but
we hope sooner than later!
Humanitarianz Community will be focused on collaborative learning for building skills and competences and not debates about humanitarian aid!
This Humanitarianz project is a work in progress. We are at the beginning of this exciting journey. My vision and mission are clear! Humanitarianz exists to help humanitarians working on the field, not organisations!
We will listen to your feedback and suggestions. If there is something we don’t offer that is needed, we’ll do it (within reason!)
We will offer everything in as many languages as possible and not just the ‘colonial ones’. However, for now, we have limited resources, so for now, we can only do so much, but the goal is to be as inclusive as possible with time.
